What roles can you actually apply for?
This page answers that for the two programs you can enrol in today — Foundation and Modern Data Analytics. It also tells you what the British Columbia labour-market data does and does not support, because most of what you will read elsewhere about this market is either unsourced or quietly wrong.
Read this first: we could not verify per-role hiring demand to a standard we would publish. You will see that stated on most roles below rather than filled in with something plausible. Jump to what we don’t know →
Five families, not one job title
Every skill below links to the week of the syllabus that teaches it. If a week doesn’t exist, the claim doesn’t render — that rule is enforced by a test, not by good intentions.
13 roles across 5 families. Each axis is curriculum coverage — the number of roles these programs map to, not hiring demand or graduate proficiency.
Turning questions into queries, models and a defensible recommendation. The centre of gravity for the Modern Data Analytics track.
Building the models and transformations other people query, rather than querying them yourself.
The Foundation track is more of a software track than most people expect: Python, Git, REST APIs with FastAPI, Docker and automation pipelines.
Directing, prompting and auditing AI tooling as part of an ordinary analyst or developer job — the thesis the Foundation track is built around.
Analyst roles hired inside a function — marketing, finance, health, supply chain — plus privacy and governance work.
Every family’s honest caveat — including the two roles we removed on evidence — is on the cards below.
Example — Data Analyst: every skill → the week that backs it
Core analytics
Turning questions into queries, models and a defensible recommendation. The centre of gravity for the Modern Data Analytics track.
The honest caveat: There is no clean "Data Analyst" occupation code in Canada, so published demand and wage data for this family is fragmented across at least three unit groups and none of it maps cleanly onto the job titles employers actually post. Treat every published figure for this family as approximate.
Data Analyst
Modern Data Analytics · Foundation
- checkSQL, basic through advanced — Modern Data Analytics wk 1, Modern Data Analytics wk 2, Foundation wk 3, Foundation wk 8
- checkPython data wrangling with pandas — Modern Data Analytics wk 4, Foundation wk 7
- checkDashboard build and data storytelling — Modern Data Analytics wk 7
- checkEnd-to-end analysis with an executive readout — Modern Data Analytics wk 11, Modern Data Analytics wk 12
Closest occupation code · NOC 21223 (approximate match)
NOC 21223 is officially "Database analysts and data administrators" — it is the code most often used as a data-analyst proxy, but it is not the same job. It is TEER 1, meaning a degree or diploma is normally expected, and Statistics Canada also lists prior programming experience as a normal entry condition. We show it because it is the closest published data, not because it describes this role well.
Business Intelligence Analyst / BI Developer
Modern Data Analytics
- checkPower BI modelling and advanced BI — Modern Data Analytics wk 6
- checkData modelling on a cloud warehouse — Modern Data Analytics wk 5
- checkDashboard UX and stakeholder storytelling — Modern Data Analytics wk 7
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
Reporting / Operations Analyst
Modern Data Analytics · Foundation
- checkAdvanced SQL for enterprise reporting — Modern Data Analytics wk 2
- checkScheduled automation of recurring reports — Foundation wk 9
Routine report production is the work most exposed to automation, including by the same AI tooling we teach. We think that argues for learning to build the pipeline rather than to run the report — but you should weigh it.
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
Business / Business Systems Analyst
Modern Data Analytics
- checkRequirements and stakeholder framing — Modern Data Analytics wk 8
- checkData modelling — Modern Data Analytics wk 5
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
Pipeline & analytics engineering
Building the models and transformations other people query, rather than querying them yourself.
The honest caveat: We deliberately do NOT list Junior Data Engineer here. Our own research found data engineering in this market to be a mid-career destination reached after analyst or developer experience, not a first job out of a 10–12 week program. Presenting it as an entry target would be dishonest, so we removed it.
Analytics Engineer
Modern Data Analytics
- checkAnalytics engineering workflow and dbt-style transformation — Modern Data Analytics wk 9
- checkCloud warehousing and data modelling — Modern Data Analytics wk 5
- checkVersion control and review workflow — Foundation wk 2
Usually a second role rather than a first. Most postings we see assume prior analyst experience.
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
Database Analyst
Modern Data Analytics
- checkRelational database design and SQL — Modern Data Analytics wk 1, Modern Data Analytics wk 2
Closest occupation code · NOC 21223 (direct match)
This is the job NOC 21223 actually describes. It is TEER 1 — a degree or diploma plus prior programming experience is the normal entry condition — so be clear-eyed that our programs alone are unlikely to clear that bar.
Software & automation
The Foundation track is more of a software track than most people expect: Python, Git, REST APIs with FastAPI, Docker and automation pipelines.
The honest caveat: Discrete "junior" titles are rare in this market — we checked, and job-board counts for them are badly inflated. The realistic route here is usually an automation or integration role inside a non-tech company rather than a junior developer seat at a software firm.
Automation Developer
Foundation
- checkAutomation pipelines combining Python, SQL and APIs — Foundation wk 9
- checkPython fundamentals — Foundation wk 1
- checkError handling and scheduled reliability — Foundation wk 9
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
API / Integration Developer
Foundation
- checkConsuming, normalising and publishing REST APIs with FastAPI — Foundation wk 5
- checkGit and pull-request workflow — Foundation wk 2
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
Junior Python Developer
Foundation
- checkPython from fundamentals to a packaged CLI tool — Foundation wk 1
- checkDebugging a broken multi-file repository — Foundation wk 4
- checkShip-and-deploy checkpoint under time pressure — Foundation wk 6
A rare discrete title in Metro Vancouver on our own checking. We list it because the Foundation curriculum genuinely covers the stack, not because we found evidence that these roles are plentiful.
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
QA / Test Automation Analyst
Foundation
- checkWriting a regression test for a bug you fixed — Foundation wk 4
- checkPython scripting — Foundation wk 1
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
AI-literate analyst & developer work
Directing, prompting and auditing AI tooling as part of an ordinary analyst or developer job — the thesis the Foundation track is built around.
The honest caveat: We are NOT going to tell you "Prompt Engineer" is a job you can apply for. Our research found it is not a meaningful standalone hiring title in this market — prompt and retrieval literacy shows up as a SKILL inside ordinary engineering and analyst postings. We also could not establish how often it is a stated requirement, so we cannot tell you whether this is a differentiator or merely table stakes.
AI-literate analyst or developer (a skill, not a separate job)
Foundation · Modern Data Analytics
- checkAgentic development workflow in VS Code — Foundation wk 4
- checkPrompt quality as debugging discipline — Foundation wk 4
- checkAuditing AI output for hallucination and security defects — Foundation wk 6
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
Domain & governance analyst work
Analyst roles hired inside a function — marketing, finance, health, supply chain — plus privacy and governance work.
The honest caveat: This family has the weakest evidence of any on this page: our research returned NO usable demand evidence for it at all. We list it because the skills transfer and the Canadian privacy module is genuinely relevant, not because we can show you these roles are open. Treat it as a hypothesis.
Marketing / Financial / Healthcare / Supply-chain Analyst
Modern Data Analytics
- checkSQL and reporting against a real domain dataset — Modern Data Analytics wk 2
- checkRegional market analytics capstone — Modern Data Analytics wk 11
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
Data Governance / Privacy Analyst
Modern Data Analytics
- checkCanadian data privacy, ethics and compliance (PIPEDA / PIPA) — Modern Data Analytics wk 10
No verified demand data
We have not verified external demand data for this role to a standard we would publish. What we can show you is exactly what we teach for it, and which week of the syllabus backs that.
What was actually counted
Survey measurements, not forecasts. Both figures are all-occupation and province-wide — they describe the weather, not this job.
3.3%
B.C. job vacancy rate — the highest of any province. Only Yukon and the Northwest Territories were higher.
Measured · preliminaryPreliminary estimate — the publisher revises this when quarterly figures are finalised.
April 2026, seasonally adjusted
Statistics Canada · published 2026-06-25
2.5
unemployed people per job vacancy in B.C. Better than the national 3.2 — and still not a candidate-favourable market in absolute terms.

What the models and the raters say
These are forecasts and published judgments, not measurements. WorkBC says plainly that its outlook “is not intended to be interpreted as a definitive prediction.”
~4,930
projected job openings across the three occupation codes closest to analyst work, for the whole of B.C. over ten years — about 490 a year.
Projection · 2025–2035Covers NOC 21223, 21211 and 21221 only. Real analyst postings also map to 21222, 41402 and 11201, so treat this as a FLOOR on the analyst market, not its total — and never as "B.C. data analyst demand". Openings combine growth with retirements; they are not new positions.

Nobody publishes a starting wage for these jobs
That is not us being coy — no source we could find publishes a measured 0–2 year band for any of these occupations. The closest honest stand-in is the 10th-percentile wage across everyone already in the job, and we label it as exactly that.
| Occupation | Region | 10th percentile (proxy) | Median | 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Database analysts and data administrators NOC 21223 · 2023–2024 | Lower Mainland–Southwest — Metro Vancouver plus the Fraser Valley, Squamish-Lillooet and the Sunshine Coast | $32.08/hr | $44.71/hr | $60.00/hr |
| Database analysts and data administrators NOC 21223 · 2023–2024 | British Columbia | $28.75/hr | $43.96/hr | $60.00/hr |
| Database analysts and data administrators NOC 21223 · 2024 | Thompson-OkanaganProduced via Small Area Estimation — modelled, not directly measured, and fragile at small regional volumes. | $32.37/hr | $45.12/hr | — |
| Data scientists NOC 21211 · 2023–2024 | British Columbia | $32.45/hr | $48.08/hr | $88.94/hr |
| Business systems specialists NOC 21221 · 2023–2024 | British Columbia | $27.40/hr | $42.40/hr | $60.44/hr |
About that proxy column: This is the 10th-percentile wage across all people already in the occupation, used as a proxy. It is not a measured early-career salary — no source publishes one. Job Bank states only that it "might offer some insight" into starting pay.
Note the Thompson-Okanagan row: it shows a higher low and median than the region containing Metro Vancouver. That is why we don’t tell you Vancouver pays best — our own source contradicts it.
Where this story is weak
Same sources, same standard of proof, same size on the page. If we only showed you the encouraging half we’d be doing what we criticise everyone else for doing.

Add to that the education bar. The occupation code most often used as a “data analyst” proxy is NOC 21223, and TEER 1 — a bachelor's degree or college diploma is normally required, AND Statistics Canada lists prior programming experience as a normal entry condition. This is the code most often used as a "data analyst" proxy, and on the evidence it is the WRONG target for a 10–12 week graduate without a technical degree.
The job-board numbers you’ll find are not real
Before you take any “X hundred openings” figure seriously — including from us — here is what happened when we opened the results and read them.
A job board advertised 200 entry-level analyst jobs in Vancouver. Page one had none.
We opened the "entry level data analyst, Vancouver BC" results and read the first page of listings. The titles were Senior Analyst Actuarial, Senior Business Analyst, Corporate Financial Analyst, Merchandising Services Analyst and Business Development Bid Analyst — several explicitly senior, and not one an entry-level data analyst role. The headline count is a loose keyword match against the whole posting body, not a count of jobs with that title.
Checked this listing · 2026-07-19
The same pattern held for "junior Python developer" — 75 advertised, zero on the page.
Of the fifteen listings visible, none carried a junior Python title, and at least three were affirmatively senior — a Senior Python Engineer, a Staff C Programmer and an associate-level role in an unrelated discipline. We are telling you this because it is the number you would otherwise find yourself, and it is not real.

What we looked for and couldn’t verify
A failed search should be reported, not quietly omitted. These are the questions we most wanted to answer for you and could not.
- radio_button_unchecked
Which tools Metro Vancouver employers actually ask for in entry-level postings, and at what frequency. Answering this needs a coded sample of posting bodies, which occupational statistics cannot substitute for. We have not done that study, so we publish no tooling-frequency figures.
- radio_button_unchecked
Whether employers accept a portfolio of shipped projects in place of a degree. We found no evidence in either direction. This is the claim our own programs rest on, and we are not going to assert it without support.
- radio_button_unchecked
Which named Metro Vancouver employers hire at entry level, and in what volume. Every employer-level claim we tested failed verification — live job boards churn too fast to cite responsibly.
- radio_button_unchecked
Whether AI, prompt or RAG literacy appears as a stated requirement in ordinary analyst and developer postings, and how often. We found it absorbed into other roles rather than posted as its own, but we could not establish a rate.
- radio_button_unchecked
Applicant-per-posting ratios and 2025–26 B.C. technology-sector layoff data specific to junior roles. Nothing survived verification.
Every source, and what each one can’t tell you
We prefer primary government sources over salary aggregators and industry blogs. Where a publisher states a limitation on its own data, we reproduce it here rather than bury it.
- Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, April 2026
Statistics Canada · published 2026-06-25
What this source can’t tell you: Statistics Canada labels monthly Job Vacancy and Wage Survey estimates preliminary; they are revised and finalized when the corresponding quarterly estimates are released. The unemployment numerator comes from the Labour Force Survey, so this is a JVWS-over-LFS ratio, and it is an all-occupation figure that says nothing about any single occupation.
- Database analysts and data administrators (NOC 21223) — wages, British Columbia
Government of Canada Job Bank · published 2025-11-19
What this source can’t tell you: Wage estimates come from the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey with a 2023–2024 reference period, so they are roughly two years stale. Job Bank states that wages do not account for years of experience, and that published low-wage estimates "might offer some insight" into entry-level pay — a hedge, not a measurement.
- 3-Year Employment Outlook 2025–2027, British Columbia
Government of Canada Job Bank · published 2025-11-19
What this source can’t tell you: The outlook rating measures the projected BALANCE of labour supply against demand, not the volume of demand. A "Moderate" rating therefore refutes a strong-demand story without being evidence of weak demand.
- Wage methodology
Government of Canada Job Bank · published 2025-11-19
What this source can’t tell you: States that the low wage "in most cases, corresponds to the 10th percentile" and that wages do not account for years of experience. This is the primary basis for treating the low wage as a proxy only.
- B.C. Labour Market Outlook 2025 (horizon 2025–2035)
WorkBC (Province of British Columbia) · published 2025-10-01
What this source can’t tell you: WorkBC states its Outlook "is a forecast and is not intended to be interpreted as a definitive prediction". Job openings combine expansion demand with replacement demand (retirements) — they are not new positions. The 2025 edition revised the province-wide ten-year total down by roughly 70,000 against the prior edition.
- Career profile — Database analysts and data administrators (NOC 21223)
WorkBC (Province of British Columbia) · published 2025-10-01
What this source can’t tell you: Employment stock figures on WorkBC career profiles are drawn from the 2021 Census — measured, but five years old, and predating the 2022–23 technology-sector layoffs. Small-area counts are randomly rounded to the nearest 5.
The gap this closes is proof, not credentials
None of the above guarantees you a job, and we don’t claim it does. What we can control is whether you finish with work a hiring manager can actually inspect.
